Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, Brisbane

In 2007 the George Gregan Foundation committed to building an all access playground at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, however in the same year the QLD Government announced the Royal Children’s Hospital would amalgamate with the Mater Hospital in a multi-million dollar redevelopment.

The Foundation board agreed that given the Royal Children’s Hospital would remain active for at least 5 more years, it would be appropriate to commit a portion of the donated funds towards a down-sized version of the playground so the children and families who visit the hospital would not miss out. The remaining funds were held in trust to go towards the new playground within the hospital redevelopment.

In 2013, space was allocated in front of the new hospital for the playground and the hospital was officially named Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital. Designer, Ric McConaghy began discussion with hospital architects (Conrad Gargett Riddel) and construction team (Abigroup/LendLease) to create a variety of concepts.

In November 2014, under a tight and challenging schedule, a team led by Ric McConaghy and Marcel Veraart of Playscape Creations, and in collaboration with Qld Health and Lend Lease pooled their skills to construct the magnificent GGF playground at Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. The playground immediately opened to patients and visitors to coincide with the opening of the new hospital development in South Brisbane.

A huge thank you must go to designer Ric McConaghy and the partners and supporters in Queensland who pulled this project together. They worked tirelessly, against the odds to bring this playground to life and GGF is extremely appreciative of their commitment.

On Monday May 4th 2015 George and Erica Gregan, alongside Queensland Heath CE, Fionnagh Dougan officially opened the playground. The event was attended by QLD Health staff, patients and GGF supporters, including QLD Reds representatives.
