Delboy Does Australia
Delboy Does Australia

The Plan

Leaving on 5th May 2011 from Westmead Hospital, Sydney, a small group of intrepid friends is planning to travel 21,000km around Australia in a London cab marked with the number plate Delboy. Travelling from Sydney, north to Cairns, across to Darwin, down to Perth via Broome, across to Adelaide, then to Devonport to go across to Tasmania, around Tasmania, back to Melbourne and finishing back at Westmead Hospital via Canberra will be a huge feat.

Delboy will travel around Australia in a charity ride to support The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and The George Gregan Foundation.

Why are Delboy and Kevin taking on this challenge?

In January 2008 Kevin’s eldest son Daniel came home from his first day of school and complained about not feeling well. After many tests it was revealed that Daniel had a tumour the size of a plum in his brain. Daniel’s world was torn apart and Kevin, Debbie and younger brother Ryan were devastated. Daniel was treated at The Children’s Hospital, Westmead. In their time in hospital, the family encountered numerous sick children many of whom had been at the hospital their entire lives.

During one of their long walks around the grounds of the hospital Kevin and Debbie came across the George Gregan Foundation playground, and at this point they made a commitment that when their ordeal was over they would do something to support the hospital for the fantastic care Daniel and the other children were receiving.

Two years on

Daniel has recovered well from his seven-hour operation. He has a titanium plate in his head and a 59 staple scar! He has impressed his specialist, and his mum and dad with his recovery and is even back playing rugby.

In 2008 Kevin was lucky enough to purchase his dream car, or at least the dream car he could afford, a London cab with the number plates “Delboy”.

During a conversation with some mates over a few beers Kevin had an epiphany.

He would drive his Delboy around Australia and in doing so raise as much money as he possible could for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and The George Gregan Foundation.
