The George Gregan Foundation, established in August 2005, is a long term vision of George Gregan and his wife Erica. The idea for this Foundation was born in 2004 when their son Max was diagnosed with epilepsy. They spent time in hospital with Max and experienced first hand the needs of many sick children and their families. The Foundation aims to raise funds for specific projects targeting children.
The key projects on the agenda are researching, funding and delivering outdoor specialised playgrounds in children's hospitals and the funding of a Fellowship in Neurology at Westmead Children's Hospital.
The playgrounds the George Gregan Foundation provide will be unlike any other playground in Australia. The outdoor spaces will have walkways, play equipment, shade and rest elements for sick children. Each playground will be tactile, interactive and enjoyable. The design and construction of the playgrounds will be the result of significant specialised input from an architect, children's therapists, educators, doctors and patients. The first such playground opened in October 2006 at the Royal Children's Hopital in Westmead. The founddation has also raised funds to build a playground at the Royal Children's Hospital, Brisbane and this will be completed in late 2007.
The estimated cost of each playground is in excess of $600,000. Funds raised to date total over $1.7million from events held in Sydney and Brisbane alone.
Plans are also under development to commence fundraising for Pediatrics at The Canberra Hospital along side with our partners, ACT Brumbies. An extensive community program of events are planned working with all ACT schools and businesses.
Beyond the Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra projects we are in discussions with all other major children's hospitals in Vic, SA, WA and far north Queensland.
